Not Fighting Alone
A Continuous Upward Climb15 May 2012 | 12:40 pmI've been "out of it" for the last couple weeks. I'm trying to take it easy and think about some big questions (i.e. "WHAT'S GOING ON???" and "WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY LIFE???")(which haven't been answered yet). I don't have to know exactly where I'm going this summer, I just have to keep trying, keep praying, and keep trusting.I'm going to be revamping my posting this summer, starting with a recap of USLI and the events of this past semester, so look for that tomorrow. -

Megan helped a great deal but I also laid the shrink tape up without seams, used a heat gun to squeeze out the excess resin, and then allowed it cure at room temperature overnight. Tiangong-1 solar transit
14 May 2012 | 12:25 pmAstrophotographer Thierry Legault captured this image of the Solar Transit of Tiangong-1. China's Tiangong-1 is around 50 times smaller than the ISS and the solar transit lasted under a second. So, while the resulting photo isn't as clear as one of the ISS, it certainly was no small feat. USLI -- Travel Update: Awesome Tours, Awesome Rocket Fair, Launch Delayed
21 Apr 2012 | 9:03 amI was originally planning to post an update every day, but right now is honestly the first time I've had a moment of rest since the outset of the journey. We were supposed to be launching today. In fact, we were planning to have our rocket on the rack fifteen minutes ago, but the launch was canceled today. The weather is pretty nice, but there is a low cloud ceiling (~900 ft), so we can't launch because of the FAA regulations. The launch was pushed back to Sunday, which unfortunately means that we will be rushed to get our rocket in the air, and then we will have to leave early to go back to… -

USLI -- Test Launch 2.0
15 Apr 2012 | 10:16 pmYesterday three of us on the CySLI team drove up to the Tripoli MN research launch to conduct a second test launch of our rocket. In brief, mission success. We had ordered another L1115 which was supposed to be here last Thursday, but it never came. We ended up launching on a smaller motor (K1440), because the entire country seems to be out of L1115's. This was okay, because the entire point of this test launch was to determine if our shear pins worked effectively. The conditions of apogee are very much the same between 2000 feet and 5000 feet, so this launch was a reliable demonstration. We… -
USLI -- Overdue Update (2/2)
14 Apr 2012 | 12:57 amDid ejection charge firing with shear pins this afternoon:As you can see, all went well.We are driving all the way up to Minnesota tomorrow (Saturday) to mount a second test flight. Fingers crossed, hope all goes well. We're planning on taking some more onboard video as well, so stay tuned for that.

Belated: January '12 Lucerne Launch Report
12 Apr 2012 | 6:30 pmCatching up... For once I'd planned realistically and took only one complex flight with me on that day. This would be my first five-motor clustered air start in Der Red Mix II. I fired a CTI 1874K740 C*Star on the ground, then 2-sec delay, then 2 x 282H399 White Thunder, then 2-sec delay, then 2 x 150G50 Imax. Let's jump into the Flip MinoHD onboard vid and then I'll provide details. As always, and for maximum thrill, you should watch on YouTube in 720p, full-screen:From the ground Rob Greenlaw and I could clearly see the flash/pop of the H399 dipped igniters before the… -
Belated: Plaster City January 2012 launch report
3 Apr 2012 | 8:17 pmI've really got to post these entries right after the launch. Otherwise these protracted delays result. Ugh. I decided to keep it simple that day and fly motor ejection only.I captured two onboard video segments: Super Raven on CTI 867J244 White and DarkStar Lite on CTI 298H159 Green3 propellant:I was surprised at how punchy that little J was and, as you saw, the Super Raven ejection popped 3-4 seconds too early. It still attained 3,188' according to the awesome and simple Altimeter One. Here's liftoff and uneventful recovery:Second up was my well-worn DarkStar… -
Frenzy Massive kit + Pro98 6GXL casing on deck
18 Feb 2012 | 3:45 pmI still owe two launch reports from January but did not fly in February (I've been traveling). In the interim I wanted to preview what I'm hoping to fly at BALLS 21 this September:That Frenzy Massive kit is 10.5' tall (3.23m for those down unda) once constructed and you see the Pro98 6GXL casing will barely fit the length of the main tube! (for reference I'm 6'2", 1.88m). I'm considering one of three CTI reloads:6G 14005N1100 Classic moonburner (12.5s burn)6G 14272N1975 Green^3 (7.2s burn)6GXL 14263N3400 Skidmark (4.2s burn)Should be a good time. January was windless on flying days!
22 Jan 2012 | 10:19 amI'm way behind in my blog posts but wanted to note that all my previous whining about wind was offset by two brilliantly wind-free Saturdays at Plaster City and Lucerne, respectively. Video, photos, and data are on the way soon. Mother Nature and I are BFFs again. Keep up the great work, MoNa!

Popping 100 balloons with a laser
13 May 2012 | 12:00 pmHere is a world record submission video of 100 balloons falling like dominoes in a single file line. Female Cosmonaut Headed To The ISS!
11 May 2012 | 11:08 amNot a moment too soon! What wonderful news for Roskosmos and the International Space Station: Russian Cosmonaut Yelena Serova has been selected for Expedition 41, set to travel by Soyuz to the ISS in 2014.Елена СероваThere is one active female cosmonaut. ONE. Yelena is it. And of the 18 chosen since 1961, only 3 have ever flown. Those three were Soviet, so Yelena will technically be the first female cosmonaut from the Russian Federal Space Agency.Valentina Tereshkova flew on Vostok 6 in 1963, becoming both the first woman and the first civilian to fly in space. NASA Tweetup #5
3 May 2012 | 8:00 amNew Tweetup on Friday, May 4! Now called the NASA Social! Back in MY DAY they were called Tweetups, anyway. Just kidding, don't want to sound like a geezer 50 years before I should.Anyway, it's ROAD TRIP time again, and this time I'll be headed to Monterey, where I'm excited to show Camilla the Apollo Moon Tree in Friendly Plaza, and then on to the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC) on Edwards Air Force Base in California.Seems pretty big on the ground, but if you check out all of Edwards AFB on Google Maps, you'll see it's only a very tiny portion of the base! And pretty far inside…

Will SpaceX launch May 19th?
14 May 2012 | 12:24 pmClick here for my infographic about the launch NASA has updated their TV schedule to include the mission objectives for the SpaceX COTS 2+3 flight . NASA has given its approval for the launch on May 19th. Scheduled for 4:55AM ET. This is promising however SpaceX has failed to release any updates on its official site since May 7th . I would like to think they are busy preparing for the launch and not dealing with a setback or problem. I love this little tidbit from the press kit: “Demonstration launches are conducted to determine potential issues so that they might be addressed and –… -

Apollo 11′s original press kit
3 May 2012 | 3:15 pmI guess I’m feeling nostalgic and posting a number of Apollo 11 related items. Came across the original press kit from the Apollo 11 mission in the NASA History archives. This is a gem of a document exhibiting the style and simplicity of 1969. The document is entirely black & white, typed, and looks as if it was an early photocopy. The art work includes many drawings that are straight out of a comic book. The document begins with: “The United States will launch a three-man spacecraft toward the moon on July 16 with the goal of landing two astronaut-explorers on the lunar… -
